Early life and formation
A life marked by gifts, learning, and leadership.
Robert Evans, Jr. was born on March 18, 1947, in Manning, South Carolina. His family relocated to Baltimore when he was five, and he was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. His leadership and musical ability were evident early. After graduating from Baltimore City College High School, he was accepted into the Peabody Conservatory of Music.
He answered the call to ministry in 1967. During those formative years, he met Wahseeola Gross, who became his wife on October 2, 1971, as well as his trusted partner in life and ministry. His preparation also included study at the Baltimore School of the Bible and Howard University School of Divinity.
Before entering ministry full time, he worked in Maryland’s Income Tax Division and spent more than a decade teaching in Baltimore City Public Schools. Those experiences strengthened the pastoral, educational, and administrative gifts that would define his public ministry.
Pastoral and apostolic ministry
From local pastorate to a wider apostolic calling.
Following the passing of Overseer Rubin Robinson, Minister Evans was ordained an Elder and installed as pastor of Highway Church of Christ in January 1972. His ministry grew through preaching, teaching, pastoral care, and a disciplined commitment to Scripture.
In 1986, after years of committed service within the Highway Churches of Christ, Elder Evans was consecrated to the episcopacy. A divine mandate received in 1988 led him to organize the Beth-El Churches of Christ. The fellowship entered its public birth stage in 1989 and grew through new churches, national gatherings, and covenant relationships across the United States.
His apostolic vision also produced the End-Time World Christian Fellowship Association, bringing pastors and leaders from different denominations and reformations into fellowship. In that work, he became known not only as Beth-El’s Establishmentarian and first presiding leader, but also as Chief Apostle.
An enduring inheritance
Apostolic vision expressed through unity, worship, and service.
Apostle Evans carried a deep concern for Christian unity. His ministry encouraged leaders to move beyond unnecessary division and to recognize the shared work of the Body of Christ. His warmth, spiritual authority, and relational leadership helped create a fellowship in which distinct ministries could walk together without surrendering their God-given identities.
Music remained an important part of his ministry. As a recording artist, composer, and musician, he was associated with projects including Old Story, He’s Everything to Me, Secret Closet, and Christ Is Coming Back.
Apostle Robert Evans, Jr., D.D., entered eternal rest on March 13, 2000. At the time of his passing, he had served as Chief Apostle of the End-Time World Christian Fellowship Association, Presiding Prelate of Beth-El Churches of Christ, and Senior Pastor of Beth-El Temple Church of Christ. Beth-El continues to honor the spiritual architecture, covenant vision, and apostolic foundation entrusted through his life.
His vision did more than establish an organization; it created a covenant fellowship whose work continues through succeeding generations.
